Sunirmal Banerjee, hearing-impaired at birth, chose his brush as a weapon to reach out for the world of joyful sounds. Celebrated as an artist even as a young boy, he grabbed his brush and grew up with colours.
While still in school, and before he completed his diploma in Fine Art from the Government College of Art and Craft, Calcutta, his works were exhibited in different cities of world - Berlin, London, Korea, as well as in different cities in India.
Mentored by Chintamoni Kar, Bikash Bhattacharya, Ashesh Mitra, amongst others, Sunirmal's variegated nature and the presence of bright colours in his paintings, prompted him to be noticed. He was invited to participate in numerous shows in galleries such as Jehangir Art Gallery of Mumbai, AIFACS, New Delhi, etc.
Sunirmal has collected awards such as the Governor's Medal from Calcutta while in school in 1969, Silver Medal from West Bengal State Youth Festival in Calcutta, First Prize from Calcutta University Institute Platinum Jubilee Art Exhibition, Gold Medal from YMCA, Calcutta and the Indian Society of Oriental Art, Calcutta, in 1976.
Two distinct aspects of life he wishes to capture on his canvas - the eternal miseries of mankind, and paradoxically, the different waves of joy. He cannot hear, but he can see with an astounding clarity of vision. His images leave a lasting trail in his mind and are converted to his language of colour. That is how he communicates his inner realizations to the outside world.
He has painted portraits of many well-known personalities.
