Shubhankar Ray is equally adept with his paint brush as he is with his weaving. With a PhD in Painting (specializing in Textile Design) and an MFA in Textile Design, (first class) from the Banaras Hindu University, India, Ray creates vivid expressions in tapestry. His commentary on human nature is both poignant and humorous.
 
Ray has had several exhibitions in Kolkata -Aangan Art Gallery in 2008, 2007, Academy of Fine Arts, Kolkata, 2007 and 1996; exhibitions at BHU, 1991-1995 including the King Charles Memorial Exhibition in 1992.
 
Ray worked for a leading fashion house for several years. His fabric designs were exhibited in Prete a Porter Spring-Summer Fashion Fair, Paris, 2006.
 
Ray also specializes in organic art and has mastered the South Indian tradition of painting with vegetable dyes, known as Kalamkari.
